This article in MIT's Tech Review has some great work on the design conceptualization for this innovative concept created by Nicholas Negroponte of MIT's Media Lab. Negroponte, along with MIT researchers Seymour Papert, Joseph Jacobson, and other colleagues, announced the $100 Laptop initiative back in January. The endeavor has corporate sponsorship from AMD, Brightstar, Google, News Corp., and Red Hat.
