This article in BusinessWeek Online describes some efforts to create a national design council or innovation act such as India has. My favorite part of the article is when the author asks the simple question:
"...it is difficult to understand why the design industry...such as 'IDSA and APDF, have not raised their collective voices for representation."
Why not? Simply put, it's because we're all competitors and would not be able to organize to our collective benefit, particularly if that meant some existing consultancies would be put at a disadvantage. Instead I think a few big firms (IDEO, Frog, HLB, Ignition) should just get together and make it happen. Besides, they're the only ones able to fund lobbing efforts, and it's about time they act like the industry leaders they are.
