THERE WAS ONCE A TIME...

I just learned about the first Federal Design Assembly in 1973 through an article in Design Observer. Initiated by President Nixon who directed the heads of all federal departments and agencies to consider how the arts and artists might "be of help to your agency and to its programs." This program was responsible for the significant improvements to our government's graphic communications and architecture realized throughout the 70's and 80's. Through its 10 year run, thousands of designers were affected through the NEA's task forces, commissions, and assemblies, created to improve the quality of design, the skills of designers, and the designers' empolyment opportunies within government.
