Intellectual Ventures is an invention company focused soley on the creation of Intellectual Properties and Patents. Founded (and funded) by Nathan Myhrvold, after he retired from his position as chief strategist and chief technology officer of Microsoft.
The company is controversial for a number of reasons:
- It contributes to the idea of 'patent trolls'
- Its strategy will eventually lead to litigation in order to both defend it's patents and to extract licenses from companies that might be infringing on IV's properties
- Its innovative use of the patent system, maximizing the value of new ideas
- The multiple methods in which they generate new IP (acquisitions as well as brain storming with industry leaders)
- The high level of talent they have aligned to contribute.
